A Study in Staying Power: Sallie Lord on Timeless Lighting
SALLIE LORD
Designing Spaces that Endure
We’re honored to welcome Sallie Lord of GreyHunt Interiors as a contributing voice to Crystorama’s editorial series, How Lighting Defines Design. Her work reflects a philosophy we deeply admire, one rooted in longevity, restraint, and the belief that thoughtful design outlasts the moment.
The theme of Timeless vs. Trend feels especially resonant within her practice. In an industry that moves quickly, Sallie’s perspective reminds us that enduring interiors are built on quality materials, considered layering, and lighting choices that transcend seasonal shifts. Rather than chasing what is new, she prioritizes what feels lasting, pieces that hold their relevance through evolving lifestyles and architectural contexts.
Lighting, in this conversation, becomes more than a decorative accent. It becomes a defining layer, one that anchors a room, reinforces proportion, and shapes how a space is experienced over time.
We’re proud to feature her voice in this series and to explore how intentional lighting bridges the space between what is trending and what is truly timeless
"When I approach lighting design, I see it as much more than a functional necessity; it is an integral part of the design".
The Art of Distinction
When I look at lighting, I start with shape. I look at the form of a fixture, making sure it complements not just the design but sets the tone. A fixture must work with the ceiling height, the wall proportions, and the architectural details that define the room's character and tell its story.
Trends whisper promises of novelty, but they often fade as quickly as they arrive. Timeless pieces can speak to something deeper. They respect proportion, honor scale and integrate seamlessly with their surroundings.
"Trends will come and go, but thoughtful design, quality craftsmanship and an understanding of how light defines our experience remain constant."
Craftsmanship as Art
Lighting craftsmanship and materials are an art form in themselves. The difference between a fixture that feels casual and one that exudes luxury often comes down to these elements. Bespoke craftsmanship sets them apart and quality materials age gracefully.
Quality materials age gracefully. They develop patina, catch light differently as the years pass, and tell a story. When you choose fixtures crafted with care, using materials that have integrity, you're investing in something that will continue to bring beauty to a space long after installation.
Balancing Vision and Timelessness
Guiding clients away from trends without limiting creativity requires a delicate balance. When we design a home, our goal is always to create timeless designs that show flair and interest. This isn't about playing it safe or choosing boring fixtures. It's about knowing when to use lights with clean lines that complement the design and the room, and when to use ones with an abundance of detail to be the star. The juxtaposition is key. A space needs rhythm, variety, and moments of both restraint and boldness.
I encourage clients to think beyond the next five years. Will this fixture still feel special a decade from now? Will it work if they change their furniture? If the answer is yes, we're likely looking at something with staying power.
"When we choose timeless over trendy, we're not sacrificing creativity. We're honoring it in its most enduring form."
A Testament to Enduring Beauty
If I had to choose one example of lighting that has aged beautifully, it would be the crystal chandelier. Think of it as the Chanel No. 5 of lighting, the classic that never loses its relevance. A well-designed crystal chandelier is so striking and stunning that it fits perfectly in a traditional, formal setting while simultaneously balancing the straight, clean lines of a modern design.
This versatility is the hallmark of truly timeless design, which adds grandeur to any space. It bridges eras, styles and sensibilities because its beauty is rooted in something fundamental rather than in fashion.
"Designing lighting that endures is about respecting the investment our clients make in their homes. It's about choosing pieces that will continue to delight, inspire and function beautifully as life unfolds within those spaces. "
