In design, there are moments when something you’ve always believed intuitively becomes undeniable, because the research finally catches up to the feeling.

For decades, interior designers have understood that a space can shift your mood the moment you walk in. That a room can calm you down. Wake you up. Help you breathe a little deeper. Make you feel held. Or make you feel restless. And more often than not, it’s the elements you don’t immediately name, light quality, texture, material warmth, and visual rhythm, that shape that experience most.

That’s why we’re proud to share an exciting new chapter: Crystorama Lighting has officially joined Science in Design® as a community partner.

This partnership reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting the design community through education, collaboration, and product innovation, helping designers create environments that are not only beautiful, but restorative.

What Is Science in Design®?

Science in Design® has become the home furnishing industry's leading educational platform and community dedicated to exploring the measurable impact of beauty, nature, and well-designed spaces on human health and wellbeing. Grounded in research from neuroscience, medicine, biophilia, and neuroaesthetics, Science in Design helps designers and architects better understand how the built environment influences stress and nervous system response, emotional comfort, focus and cognitive clarity, rest and recovery, and even the deeper sense of safety, sanctuary, and belonging we feel within a space. In other words, Science in Design provides the language and the science behind what designers have always known instinctively: design changes how people feel.

Why Crystorama Is Leaning Into Neuroaesthetics

At Crystorama, we’ve spent more than 65 years focused on elevating the built environment through thoughtful design, craftsmanship, and materiality. As an award-winning manufacturer of residential and commercial decorative lighting and mirrors, we know lighting is never just functional.

Lighting defines atmosphere. It shapes perception. It affects the way color reads, how textures come alive, and how a room holds you, especially in the quiet hours.

Neuroaesthetics helps explain why certain spaces feel more calming, more grounded, and more human. It explores how the brain responds to beauty, pattern, natural forms, and sensory cues—proving that the environments we live in can support wellbeing in real, measurable ways.

And for us, that research is deeply aligned with where our product design is going next.

Material Intelligence: Designing with Nature as Our Palette

One of the clearest intersections between Crystorama and Science in Design is materiality. As we continue to evolve our product lines, we’re increasingly intentional about the materials we select and source, leaning more into nature-derived elements like wood, stone, and alabaster, along with organic textures and hand-finished details that bring warmth and authenticity into a space. These materials aren’t just beautiful; they carry depth, softness, and subtle variation that the eye reads as calming rather than overstimulating, helping interiors feel more grounded, comfortable, and truly lived-in. Nature has always been a design muse, now science is proving it can also be a powerful wellness strategy.

The Wellness Power of Light Quality

Lighting is one of the most powerful tools designers have to influence the mood and function of a space. It affects how we transition through the day, how we experience comfort, and how we recharge at home.

That’s why Crystorama continues to integrate LED technology into our collections, prioritizing long-lasting performance, energy efficiency, and consistent light output that supports everyday living.

But beyond the bulb, we’re focused on something deeper: how light behaves in a room.

Many of our designs create soft, dimensional illumination, patterns of light and shadow that feel organic rather than harsh. When light interacts with texture, glass, and form, it can cast gentle, rhythmic moments across ceilings and walls, creating a quieter, more calming visual field.

This is where lighting becomes more than a fixture.
It becomes an experience.

Organic Design Language: Flowers, Leaves, Vines, Curves, and Pattern

Our collections increasingly reflect the design language we’re drawn to as an industry, softer silhouettes, natural motifs, and shapes that feel more human. You’ll see it in pieces inspired by flowers and petal-like forms, leaves and vines, soft curves and rounded profiles, and delicate patternwork with layered details that bring dimension to a space. These elements echo the forms we encounter in nature, shapes the brain recognizes as familiar, comforting, and emotionally restorative. In neuroaesthetic terms, it’s a shift toward environments that feel less rigid and more intuitive: less sharp, less sterile, and more sensory, soothing, and calm.

A Partnership Built for the Design Community

Crystorama’s 2026 focus is clear: collaboration and supporting the design community. This partnership with Science in Design® is one more way we’re investing in what designers need now, education, research-backed insights, and resources that help elevate the value of their work. Through this collaboration, Crystorama will support the Science in Design mission through educational events and conversations, co-branded marketing materials, panel discussions and webinars, and shared storytelling around wellness-centered design. Our goal is to help designers speak confidently about the why behind their choices, how lighting and materials don’t just shape style, but shape wellbeing.

The Future of Design Is Human-Centered

Science is now proving what great designers have always practiced: beauty is not optional. It’s essential.

When we design spaces that feel calming, grounding, and supportive, we aren’t just shaping interiors—we’re shaping daily life. The way people gather, rest, recover, and live at home.

We’re honored to join the Science in Design® community and excited for what this partnership will bring to the industry in 2026 and beyond.

Because lighting doesn’t just illuminate a room. It helps shape how we feel inside it.
